About
What Is Humboldt Friends?
Humboldt Friends is a grassroots friendship network and social inclusion project based in Humboldt County, California. It was founded by Nathan William Young, a public autism advocate and the original founder of Autism Candles—a social enterprise featured on national platforms, the front pages of local newspapers, and regional radio stations. Rooted in compassion, disability inclusion, and community care, Humboldt Friends began as an alternative to traditional day programs for autistic and developmentally disabled adults. Over time, it expanded to include everyone—because human connection, support, and belonging are universal needs.
What We Do
We help people meet and form genuine friendships through:
- Nature outings, buddy walks, and community events
- Local business meetups and public park gatherings
- Small group hangouts, including house-hosted friend circles
- Online chat discussions to plan in-person activities
- Inclusive employment opportunities working alongside people with disabilities
- Volunteer projects and creative expression
- Human-interest community journalism
Humboldt Friends is also developing a platform for community-based news and storytelling, focusing on real people—students, elders, artists, the unhoused, caregivers—with an emphasis on human interest. This effort helps shine light on the overlooked stories that bring us together as neighbors and citizens.
Safety & Inclusion
- Minors (under 18) may only participate with active parental oversight. This includes parent-attended events or supervised parent groups meeting with other parents present. No minor may be enrolled or attend without direct guardian involvement.
- Friend Interviews help ensure safety and respectful interaction. These brief, relaxed conversations allow us to understand your needs, boundaries, and interests before connecting you with others.
- Events happen in public locations or trusted member homes. We maintain a culture of mutual respect, clear expectations, and shared responsibility.
- Employment opportunities are available for caring, responsible individuals who want to support adults with disabilities—helping with daily outings, community engagement, and the Humboldt Friends mission of inclusion.
What We Stand For
- Friendship over formality
- Inclusion over isolation
- People over programs
- Support without stigma
- Stories that build bridges, not walls
Humboldt Friends is not a company. It’s a friend-powered movement for those who believe in empathy, connection, and a better way to belong.
